It is very common in households around the world to incorporate dogs and other domestic animals into the family home. Puppies can be quite destructive and often mischievous. Use the following article to help you start training your dog.

When training a dog, make sure to stay consistent. Write down the specific commands you want to use with your dog, and get everyone in your household to review the list and use the same words. It is also recommended that everyone use the same positive reinforcements for good behavior and negative response when the dog is disobedient. If other people are not following your training program, it can make your dog confused, which will set back your dog’s training.

Your dog should be eating the right amount of healthy food. If the dog’s diet is poor, it is not good for their health. It can make your dog behave badly and is not good for their health. Sometimes, it is possible to improve your pet’s behavior and cooperation simply by improving the quality of his or her diet.

Always train your dog in a motivated, positive environment. Give your dog frequent rewards for his obedience. Too much negativity and punishment will cause your dog to fear you more than want to be around you and follow your commands.

Use good quality treats when training your dog for best results. Cheese, hot dogs or other normally taboo treats can be used as a reward for a job well done.

Be consistent with your cues when training a dog. Dogs respond well to consistency and will soon associate a specific hand jester or verbal command with the appropriate action. It is essential not to confuse your dog with commands that are not the same every single time. By doing this, you will have a higher rate of success with training your pet.

If your dog has separation anxiety, he needs to have ties to others beside just yourself. If your dog has other important connections in its life, it will feel less reliant on you.

You will want to make certain you have your dog fixed at six months of age. This should happen at the same time as your first obedience classes. A dog that has been spayed or neutered will do better in obedience school than one who has not been. This will make your pet healthier and happier, and make your ownership experience happier, too.

Have a blast during each training session with your dog. Try and develop a bond with your dog by playing with him, it will only encourage the dog to want to please you more during training. Training is fun for your dog, but it doesn’t always have to be about learning something new. Play for the sake of playing.

Most of all, training a dog lays out the dog/owner relationship rules. You enjoy each other much more once those guidelines are outlined. You must continue to reinforce what you are teaching your dog. Keep his knowledge sharp and stay on top of any deviations in his behavior. When the time comes that you have trained your dog in the basics, the things you and he can achieve have no limit.

Starting to groom your puppy in a situation in which he does not feel entirely comfortable is extremely difficult. Also do not expect your puppy to like being groomed from the very beginning. Be patient: It takes some time before he gets used to this unknown procedure.

Don’t get mad about him about his refusal. Just play with him for a short while and then start again with your grooming activities. Praise him and give him a treat as soon as he lets you continue with your work.

Bathing a puppy never comes easy. Make sure the water temperature is around 36 to 38 degrees Celsius. There is a huge variety of mild puppy shampoos available. Try not to get it in touch with its eyes and ears.

Brushing your puppy: For this purpose you should always use a soft brush. Start at his head and brush down to his tail and then from his neck to his paws while not pressing too hard. Remain patient and praise your pet for its obedience.

Clearing the ears of your puppy can be done by a moist cotton ball or tissue. Make sure you wipe very gently around his inner ear and apply very little pressure.

Cleaning his ears is also a procedure that your puppy will not really like. So as long as your puppy is used to it, take your time, and remain patient. Also do not forget to praise him.

As far as teeth brushing is concerned you should know that it is in the 4-7 months age range that puppies lose their baby teeth. After that, regular teeth brushing can protect their adult teeth.

It may take some time before your dog gets used to your teeth brushing attempt. To make it easier for him use a very soft toothbrush and a let him taste of the toothpaste before applying. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically made for puppies.

In the beginning it might well be that your brushing efforts are rather ineffective. Don’t worry about it: After a while you can start using a firmer brush which your dog will enjoy as soon he gets used to it.

When you start working with your new puppy there are some commands that you want to make certain that you start out to show them.

If you can teach your puppy to lie down at early age to some signal or command it’ll improve the relationship between you and your puppy.

Put a buckle training collar or nylon choke collar on your puppy and attach a leash into it. You will have your pup sitting in front of you.

Keep the leash short as you begin this exercise. Hold it in your left hand, and then say the verbal command “down.” As you do this, use your right hand to give the additional hand signal of showing him your palm.

Later he will be expected to respond to both the verbal command and the hand gesture. After giving the command, gently pull him down with the leash. Once he is in the down position, put a treat between his paws and praise him generously.

After this first time, you need to repeat it over and over again. Always make sure to give him the treat and praise him as much as you can.

As your dog gets the point, you should not need to pull him down by the leash anymore. You should be able to stand upright and simply give the verbal command combined with the hand gesture. After a while he will understand that.

What you might need the leash for is if your puppy tries to lie down at a different location from where he was standing. If he does so, put him back in the original spot.

The puppy will most likely go down by themselves after repeating the exercise for a while. You want to be excited and in an exceedingly ecstatic tone of voice and tell them how much of a good puppy they are as you give them the treat. This will encourage them to display this behavior again.

Is your dog scratching all the time? The first thing that might come to mind is fleas, but actually there are many reasons why you dog might be itchy all the time.

If you’ve ruled out fleas and the other obvious causes, you might want to look into allergies. Oh boy – that’s a big topic. Just like with humans, there are so many things that your dog could be allergic to. Let’s look at one of the most common dog allergies: dog food.

Dog food allergies are a very common reason for excessive dog scratching. The dog can be allergic to a whole food item or just a part of that food item (a particular element of that food item).

What causes dog food allergy? When a dog eats, the protein in the food is digested, and substances called glycoproteins pass into the bloodstream. In some dogs, the glycoprotein is recognized as a foreign substance, and the chemicals that cause itching are released.

With dogs, the reaction shows up in the skin, with severe itching, usually all over the body.

What can you do about dog food allergies? The first step (after visiting your vet to rule out other reasons for the dog scratching) is to try a formulation of hypoallergenic dog food.

Whichever hypoallergenic dog food you choose, make sure it is one that does not contain chemical preservatives and uses quality protein and carbohydrate sources, making it less likely for your pet to react to the food. Although it’s probably convenient to pick up a bag at the vet clinic, keep in mind that you can often find a better price at pet stores.

Always purchase a trial pack first and see how well your pet tolerates it. You might not even need to buy a dog food that is officially “hypoallergenic”. You may find that simply changing your pet’s protein and carbohydrate sources will alleviate allergic reactions.

While most puppies are born with no teeth, you can be assured that your puppy will have a full set of sharp primary teeth by the age of around 12 weeks.

In order to ensure a healthy set of teeth for your puppy, your vet should always have a look at them, too, when you bring your dog in for vaccinations. This is of great importance so that you know for sure that the teeth are coming out right.

But of course your puppy will not keep his primary teeth for too long. During month four, his adult teeth start coming out and within three more months the full set is complete.

A check again with the vet when he is 5 to 6 months of age to check his adult teeth are coming through as they should be is beneficial.

In addition to the regular check-ups, you should also make sure to brush your puppy’s teeth regularly. This should be done from the third month onwards. But never ever use human tooth paste, because it would make your dog sick; use puppy toothpaste instead.

It is never easy to brush someone else’s teeth, and you might find it strange with your dog. Also, you might doubt the effectiveness of your brushing, but don’t worry about that now. The most important part of it all is getting the puppy used to the process anyway.

Start off with an extra soft brush, letting him taste the toothpaste before you start brushing. Then brush with a slow and gentle motion, remembering to reward him with praise and a treat.

Do not be surprised if your pup seems unhappy about the teeth brushing procedure at some point during the third and fifth month. If this happens, simply stop for a little while.

Many puppies end up with their gums being painful at the time they are losing their primary teeth and brushing can be unpleasant for them. Simply wait until he has a full set of adult teeth in place and restart the process.

Coprophagia is the scientific term for eating poop. In our canine friends, this behavior is seen most often in puppies, who usually grow out of it.

Another group that commonly eats poop are nursing mothers; their behavior, however, is quite understandable: They could not risk their puppies being found by predators, so they “cleaned up” after them.

In fact, it has been said that humans started keeping dogs around them for the simple purpose of “waste management”. But even if this theory were true, today we certainly do not want our little friends eating poop.

If your dog is eating poop, the first thing you want to do is have him checked out at the vet. Nutritional disorders can cause coprophagia (the medical term for poop eating), so you need to rule that out before trying to correct the behavior.

When it comes to altering this behavior, there are two routes to take. The first is by training. One way to alter your dog’s behavior is to teach it to defecate in only one area and make sure it only has access to that area when defecating.

Another training routine is to teach your dog the “Leave It” command. The advantage of this command is that it is useful for many other situations besides poop eating.

If you feel that training your dog is too much work, you can also try to make the feces taste really bad, so that your dog will not want to eat it (an approach I do not recommend). This can be done by adding hot sauce or the like.

However, this, too, can be a lot of work, because it will have to be applied to all feces that your dog has access to. So it may not even be practical. But the idea is simple: Over time your dog would come to the conclusion that feces do not taste good, and he will leave them alone.

Of course, as with anything when it comes to dog training, it will take time, patience, and effort. But it will be worthwhile and once solved, you will not need to worry about it anymore.

If you give your puppy a lot of attention, love, and training, he will, most likely, turn out a wonderful dog. In order to achieve this, getting the help of a professional trainer is highly recommended.

If your dog seems suitable for dog shows, getting help from a professional dog trainer will be even more important. For shows your dog will need to be extremely well behaved, and your trainer could help you achieve that much faster.

Of course, professional trainers do not come for free, but the money is, in my opinion, certainly money well spent. Especially considering how much time and stress it saves you.

The number of hours needed will vary from dog to dog as each has their own personality traits that will need some adjustments from time to time. Some professional’s like to know or see the environment the pet lives in while he is in training.

Both, the time it takes to train the dog and the decision to see the house where the dog lives, depend on the behavioral issue that the dog displays. Seeing the house might be helpful for the trainer when deciding how to go about teaching the dog.

Along the same lines, depending on the issue, the dog trainer might opt for training the dog at his home rather than elsewhere. Or they might also choose to train them at their dog school, where there are many more dogs around.

This option, of course, is much less expensive than having the trainer come to one’s house. Even though, of course, dog trainers will excel at helping people at home.

This seasoned professional loves and communicates to each animal easily. This allows easier training so both pet and master can bond without the tensions that may come from troublesome issues.

And once all commands are in place, ownership of a well trained animal is quite an accomplishment and pure joy.

A new puppy is a wonderful addition to almost any home and can mature into a loyal pet and companion. That’s why it’s critical that a puppy is toilet trained properly so that he’ll be a source of joy instead of a burden that often has to be cleaned up after. If you would like to succeed as you potty train a puppy, it is really important that you start his training when you bring him home. There are many step-by-step approaches that can be used to potty train a puppy but the simplest and most effective will most likely be to teach him to do his business outside the house.

The very first thing you need to do, preferably prior to bringing the puppy home, is decide exactly where his selected bathroom area is going to be. The yard, a balcony, or even a puppy training pad in your bathroom are all effective spots if he is able to access them by himself. This will prevent the puppy from doing his business in the wrong spot because somebody was not around to open the door for him.

When you’ve selected a designated bathroom area, it is advisable to take him to it the moment you bring him home. In the event that he does his business there, praise him verbally and pet him. Do your very best to make it a place that he’ll want to return to whenever he needs to go. This will enforce positive feelings in your puppy about going to the bathroom there.

Now that you’ve planted the seed, all you will have to do is be sure he uses the bathroom in that particular spot every single time. Your pup must be brought to his bathroom spot the minute he begins displaying signs that he needs to go. These can include squatting, circling around, and occasionally whining.

One of the secrets to potty train a puppy is punishing him for going to the bathroom somewhere other than his designated area. If he has an accident, firmly say “no” and then take him to his bathroom spot. Never hit or punish your puppy or he’ll attempt to hide each time he needs to go. The accident has to be cleaned up very thoroughly to remove the scent that could encourage him to use the bathroom there in the future.

Keep up the routine of taking your puppy to his area whenever he has to use the bathroom and correcting him for going somewhere else. Do not try to switch your puppy’s designated bathroom spot as this will confuse him and can mess up his potty training completely. After a couple weeks, your pup should be heading to his bathroom spot every single time he has to go.

Common wisdom tells us that old dogs cannot be taught new tricks. Personally, however, I disagree with this statement.

Training old dogs is just as easy as training new puppies; you just have to know how to properly handle them because there is great difference in handling older dogs versus handling new puppies.

A great many dog lovers would even claim that training older dogs is much more easy than training younger ones, because of the following reasons:

Usually, older dogs will have come to understand the word “no”; they may also be less lively and a bit more relaxed; and, moreover, older dogs will have internalized the meaning of the pack order. They should understand your dominance and leadership and thus follow your guidance.

Of course, after bringing an older dog home, the first thing you need to do is house train him. He will not intuitively know where he is allowed to do his business, so you need to show him. Please also keep in mind that after riding in the car, your new dog might really need to use the bathroom.

It is recommended that you introduce him to his bathroom area and let him do his thing there before bringing him into the house. This might take a while so it is important to keep your cool and patient. Praising him when he does will be a good motivation for him and he’ll likely remember his bathroom area faster.

Next step: Bring him inside the house and show him around. But always be mindful that just because he now knows where to go for his bathroom, this does not necessarily mean that he will know how to tell you when he needs to go.

So it is up to you to watch out for hints. If you think he needs to go, bring him outside. And don’t forget to praise him. It might take a few days for him to get settled at your place, but after that you should be able to make the bathroom breaks quite regular: Once in the morning, after meals, once at night – and of course after playtimes.

Each time you bring him outside and he does his business, praise him. And should accidents ever happen, just clean it up and continue as planned. Do NOT punish him.

You will not get around obedience training when you get a new dog. It will help your dog learn that you are the boss. Once he considers you the pack leader, he is much more likely to follow your commands and behave himself properly – around you, other people, and other dogs.

There are some basic commands that you can teach your new puppy, such as sit and stay. Have some doggie treats with you and always reward your pet when it obeys you.

Whatever happens, do not punish him. Disciplining him physically will not speed up the training. In fact, it will probably slow you down, because your dog might become scared of you.

Instead just reward the desired behavior, so that your dog will end up associating the command with a treat – which is what you want.

And if you want to teach your dog even more and continue your bonding, attending a dog school might be useful. Taking classes there can be quite a lot of fun for both you and your dog, and he will also be exposed to others dogs and other people there.

If your dog is shy or if he has had scary encounters with people, before he came to you, he might struggle in the classes at first. But with enough time and patience he will, hopefully, learn to people can be trusted.

If you attend these classes regularly, your dog will understand that he needs to behave himself in public, and that you want him to walk beside you without pulling on the leash.

Also, the dog professional should be able to give you recommendations regarding the type of leash and collar that would work best for your dog. In general, your dog trainer should be the one to ask, if you have any pressing questions or issues. You never know, he might be able to help you.

Dog obedience training is fun for you and your pet. You will find that this investment will bring you years of happiness with your pet. After all, could you imagine anything better than a well-behaved, loyal, fun friend, like your dog will be?
