Preparing Your Children For New Pets

Any pet owner that has a child needs to learn how to prepare his or her children for the new pets. You can protect your children and pets alike from injuries by training both pet and child.

The first thing you should let your kids know on the day you are bringing the pet home is that the pet – regardless of what it may be – would need some time to adjust to its new settings, and may be a bit anxious. Young children are prone to making loud noises – tell them to relax and refrain from screaming or yelling. Try not to crowd the pet – they don’t like being cornered, and to a new pet, you’re all strangers to be treated with caution.

Unless your children are of proper age, you should prohibit them from picking up or squeezing pets – make sure they know the proper procedures first. Gestures such as pinching, hair pulling, tail pulling or ear pulling should be discouraged. Once again, pets are living creatures who feel pain just like human beings, and are capable of causing pain in retaliation due to what they feel is overly aggressive behavior.

Dogs and cats are capable of a much greater range of hearing than people. Do not let your children scream or shout at your pet’s ear, because this could either cause hearing damage or cause the pet to retaliate. Also, since dogs would also react defensively when stared at face-to-face, you should discourage your children from staring at your pets face-to-face.

Don’t let your children tempt or tease pets by dangling treats in front of them. Pets can retaliate aggressively if a piece of food or toy is withheld from them, as they could get frustrated by this act of teasing.

Never, ever, let your children hit or kick a pet, no matter how big and strong the dog is. Dogs, in particular, could retaliate violently once a blow lands on a soft spot and hurts it.

Unlike human beings, pets cannot talk. You can’t expect them to say “hey, man…that hurts!” in a way you’d understand. When hurt, pets react by scratching, biting, and roaring or growling as a defense mechanism. Treat your pets like you wish to be treated, and let your children do the same.

Although there are many types of dog training techniques, they all can be reduced to a few basic principles. You have to learn to communicate effectively with your dog, be patient and not give up until he gets the message. Don’t expect any technique to work the first time you try it. You may have to repeat it a dozen time before it starts to sink in. The following are some tipsto help make training your dog as painless as possible.

All trainers know that leash training is one of the first places that you should start with your dog. At the very least, dogs should be able to properly walk on a leash with you. Dogs should never pull you. Only walk with you. The best way to train your dog is using a Martingale collar. This comes with an extra loop which will tighten around their are neck if they decide to pull you along. It is important that you teach your dog that you need to walk at a certain tempo. If the dog begins to pull you, stop walking. Walking can resume once there is slacked in leash line. The “heel” is not the same. This has to do with your dog at your side. What you really want to focus on is making sure that your dog is not leading you down the street.

If you have a new puppy, one of the first things you want to do is housebreak him. One of the most reliable ways to do this is by using a crate. This technique works because dogs instinctively don’t want to urinate or defecate in their sleeping area. Make the crate a nesting area for the puppy, with a blanket. When the puppy is small, he’ll need frequent breaks. Whenever he eliminates outside the crate, give him a treat. This takes some patience on your part, because you’ll have to take him in and out of the crate frequently. It’s one of the best ways to housebreak a puppy, though. A crate will also be useful to prevent a puppy from chewing things up while you’re out.

Being the pack leader is essential in regard to training your dog and having them listen to you. In essence, you become the alpha dog of the pack. Your dog might think that they are in charge if they believe they are the alpha dog. The right message must be sent to your dog which requires some specific actions. Giving your dog scraps from the table while you eat is not a good idea. Dogs should never be allowed to sit where humans do like the sofa. Always lead when you are leaving your house. If you go second, your dog will actually believe it is in charge of the pack. Begging is not allowed, nor is whining for anything. And you should never give it anything if it does.

Since dogs want to please their owners, it’s usually not that hard to train them once you find the right techniques. If there’s a persistent problem, you should make sure the dog is healthy. If there’s still a problem area, you may have to consult with a professional. In most cases, however, the dog training strategies we’ve covered here will be effective at getting your dog to obey your commands.

To many pet owners, crating a dog, even for a little while, seems like a terrible punishment. But take heart. Dog don’t have the same reaction to the crate as humans.

These are like time out corners for your dog.

Just as a time out is not the right method for a small baby, the crate is not the best choice for a new puppy. The best time to crate train a dog, however, is while he’s young. It’s nice to cuddle your new puppy, but you will want to crate him for a while daily. Try crating the dog while you do some local shopping, knowing that you will return soon. Give him a chew toy to keep him comfortable. This training will teach the dog to not relieve himself in the house, as dogs tend to not defecate where they sleep. It will also protect him from putting dangerous items him his mouth. At the same time it protects your belongings from the unrepentant damage of puppy teeth.

Even after housebreaking, some dogs benefit from crating. Breeds that are known for being hyperactive, such as Jack Russell terriers, generally grow into calmer adults if they are crated for a while each day until they are a year or more old. For pets with anxiety, a crate can create a safe environment.

When implemented correctly, your dog will treat the crate as their own personal space. It can become their quiet retreat when there is too much going on in the house or when they are just plain tuckered out. Experts say not to use the crate as a punishment, but they may independently go there themselves to calm down.

Even if you have an outdoor dog, crating still can have benefits. There are still times when even the outdoor dog will need to be placed in a crate, such as a kennel, the vet’s office, at a grooming center. If he is already comfortable with spending some time in a crate, then those experiences will be less traumatic for him.

Choose a crate that is at least 6 inches longer than your dog will be when grown and tall enough to allow him to stand up and turn around comfortably. Your options will include plastic forms that can also be used as carriers for transporting your dog, soft sided cloth carrier/crates, collapsible or semi-permanent wire enclosures, and some that are designed to resemble furniture. Be sure to select one that will provide adequate ventilation and light for your pet’s comfort.

Train Your Dog The Right Way.

Author: Alison Heath

Dogs, regardless of their size, tend to have a general attitude about how they behave. If a person is mindful of this, then there shouldn’t be any problems with training, no matter the type of dog they decide to get. Read on to find out how to communicate better with a dog by using the information that provides some help.

There are different tricks you can try when you are crate training your dog. If they shy away from the crate, try placing a chew bone and shutting its gate when they are not inside. If a dog sees something in the crate that they want, they will desire to enter it. When they go inside to get the bone, give them lots of positive reinforcement.

Be sure to keep your dog active and engaged a great deal of the time. Dogs can get bored very easily. Conditions of boredom are not conducive to training. A happy and well-exercised dog is an easily trained dog. Go for a long walk with your dog.

The first step of training your pooch should be to assert your control. If the dog does not understand that you have control he will ignore your commands and act with outright disobedience. In practice, this means that you should walk ahead when walking your dog, for instance, rather than allowing him or her to take the lead.

Get your dog ready early for his trips to the veterinarian. Pet him across his entire body and praise him if he responds favorably. You will want to get him ready to tolerate the doctor touching his mouth and paws. Ask some of your family and friends to assist you with this.

Clickers can be great behavioral training tools. To use one, make a positive connection between good behavior and the noise made by the clicker. Over the course of a few days use the clicker and immediately give your dog a treat. Eventually, your dog will learn that the noise means “good,” and this will help shape their behavior by using this tool.

A variety of rewards, such as treats, praise and toys keep your dog interested in pleasing you. These treats should be easily distinguishable from the common biscuit variety you may give your dog on a regular basis as special achievements in training merit special edibles in reward.

To improve the efficiency of your training routine, make sure your dog eats and poops at around the same time every day. This allows you to know when your dog has to go and take him outside to do his business before your carpet gets ruined. This helps your puppy learn to “hold it” for a bit, until he knows it’s time to go out and will help save you money on carpet cleaning.

It is important for your dog to get used to being away from you, especially if you travel a lot. This can be instilled in your dog through training. If you dog starts barking or running wild as soon as you head for the door, separation anxiety is the likely culprit. With training, you can encourage your dog towards performing more constructive, healthy activities when he’s alone. Always make sure you shower your dog with an abundance of love and affection to comfort his anxious feelings.

Most people are surprised how quickly their dog can learn from training and how fast they get results. So if you are looking to change any of your dog’s wayward ways, try some of our tips for quick success!
