Dog Training Ultimate Guide

Dog behaviorial school – when everything else fails.

Want to know 3 easy steps to clicker train your Vizsla fast?

I feel your pain… I spent 12 months with an ‘out of control’ dog before I found relief.

Whatever kind of dog you have, clicker dog training is one of the most effective and impressive methods for controlling and dictating a dog’s behaviour when trying to teach them basic commands. It takes very little time to master clicker training and with a well operated clicker, you can teach your dog nearly anything.

Clicker Training – The Theory Behind It

The concept behind clicker coaching is that you are training the dog to link the sound of the clicker – a robust, pointed sound that they can hear from 20+ yards away – with a particular command you give. The point of the training is to mark particular desirable behavior and then reward it with the sound of the clicker.

Of course clicker dog training does not start with a clicker. You must first teach your dog that the clicker is a reward for good behaviour. This can be done with a bag of treats and a simple, two dollar clicker from your local pet store.

Why should you follow this method?

* Your Vizsla will connect the clicker with ‘doing a good job’ and ‘receiving a treat’ only

* Verbal commands are given in many different situations – this can cause confusion in your dog’s mind and therefore verbal commands are often not as strong as a clicker response

The Method Behind Clicker Training

There are 3 very simple steps to train your dog to respond to a clicker.

Step 1. Entice the behavior – ask your Vizsla to do something you desire. It can be sitting, heeling, lying down, or whatever other behaviours you are attempting to teach.

Step 2. After you’ve gotten them to perform their behaviour, mark it with a click.

Step 3. Offer a reward.

It generally takes only 2 or 3 markings before your dog learns the connection between the behavior and the click.

Once the dog has done the behavior and received their reward, continue doing it to buttress the behavior as much as humanly possible. You don’t need to use treats ever single time. Praise and petting work just as well and can at last replace the behavior.

Clicker obedience training is effective because of the speed of the connection between behaviour and click in the dog’s mind. An oral command on the other hand can take a little longer to train.

Transitioning to a Command

Once your Vizsla has associated the new behaviour with the click – it is time to transition to a command.

Step 1. Give the command Step 2. Click Step 3. Give a Reward

Your dog will quickly learn to associate all 3 steps.

Ultimately, with good clicker training, your Vizsla will respond to oral cues and praise for behaviour without the need for treats.

As you might imagine, clicker dog training has a number of applications. It can make training your Vizsla so much easier in many ways. With a simple, sharp command, you can mark and reinforce nearly any behaviour.

The question is, can you change your Vizsla’s annoying behaviours for good? Yes you can! Check out my free e-book on How To STOP Your Vizsla’s Obedience Issues For Good!, and become the APLHA dog.

Watching Dog Wellness

Author: Kristi Tran
26.07.2010

Dogs have numerous health problems which are, normally, not critical. Getting unwell is probably the more common ones. And i am certain each dog owner knows, and recognizes, that coughing sound which means your pet is about to be unwell. Just what are we able to do regarding this? Well, needless to say, the very first thing is to swiftly get the puppy outside.

And what causes canines to be unwell? Clearly, it could be any one causes, the majority of which do not imply the doggy is really sick. He or she could have ingested something that did not go along with them. And this doesn’t suggest you need to get rid of the puppy food, as well. Each dog will grab and eat stuff that he comes across on his path. A large number of are harmless, yet at times a puppy will take some thing he must not, and a short while later on, back it comes. However I never allow my dog to pick things up and feed on them. Yet can you watch your pet each and every moment of each and every day?

There are other things that might cause a dog to be sick, as well. Some thing could have tickled the back of his throat. He often have picked up a spare hair that was thrown off from his coat. In case he eats grass, and a lot dogs do, every once in awhile, a slightly longer blade could also have tickled his throat. In reality some individuals believe that a doggy will eat any time his tummy is not feeling so at ease.

Remember that, for a puppy, being sick isn’t the as upsetting circumstance as it is for any human being. Most of us are simply ill if we are really unwell. Needless to say, if the illness is much more than a single event, then it can reveal some thing is really amiss with the doggy. Meaning it’s time to breathe deeply, drill down into your purses, and call up the veterinarian.

If your pet dog is unwell, relax and do not make a great deal of talk about it. Your pet may not be in the slightest affected by the event. They have a tendency to do the equivalent of shrug their shoulder blades.

Dog Biting Problems-A Serious Issue

Author: Brad Davenport
24.02.2010

Dog biting is probably the most serious of all dog behavioral problems. Peeing on the carpet, going on the couch or any other behavioral problem will not raise such dire results as biting, as many communities demand to put down a dog if it bites someone seriously. If your dog exhibits biting tendency then it might cost his life, which makes it vital to train your dog to not bite anyone ever.

On the other hand, biting problems are common and quite normal in case of puppies. This problem arises mostly during their teething period when they have an uncontrollable urge to chew and bite on anything and everything. Though a puppy bite might break your skin it will not pose any other serious problems. However, this is the right time and age to train your puppy not to bite ever again

You do not have to be cruel or give harsh punishments to train your puppy. They are very sensitive creatures and all you need to make them repent is a firm No! or a censorious Bad Dog, whenever they try to bite you. When your puppy bites you, pull your hand away and repeat the firm phrase again and again which will make him realize that he is hurting you.

Most often a dog bites due to some psychological reasons. A dog takes a bite not just because he wants to hurt something or someone. They also bite to hold on to something or they bite a person or another dog to warn them of something, or they bite just for the joy of it. The best way to break the biting problem of your dog is to start early, when he is still a puppy.

Apart from psychological reasons, biting can also be an inherent quality of some dogs. A dog might be naturally temperamental and get very angry quite often. In that case, you have no other option than to send the dog to an obedience school.

If your dog shows biting tendencies then you have take it very seriously and get help as soon as possible from a professional dog trainer, as an average pet owner is not equipped to address this serious problem.

If one of your neighbors owns a pooch with dog biting problems, the best thing you can do is to prepare yourself. Buy some strong pepper spray formulated to take care of dogs. If the dog tries to bite you, don\’t hesitate to spray it in his eyes. You could also try a more friendly approach. When you run into aggressive dogs, simply give them a piece of beef jerky. If you can make friends, you can avoid being bitten.

Parvo Symptoms

Author: Geraldine Dimarco
30.11.2009

Before you check out dog parvo symptoms, you must first know what it is, what it does and how it is spread. This virus was initially found in’78 and within a two year time span it spread worldwide. Over the years the parvovirus has mutated into two different strains and a third may be evident in Vietnam, Italy and Spain. Each case of canine parvovirus Or CPV comes from the first two strains. At first it was felt that this virus would develop into feline panleukopenia, a feline parvovirus, but there is no evidence of this. All species have their own unique parvovirus that cannot be spread outside of the species.

Even though the virus cannot be spread from a cat to a dog or from a bird to a cat, they can spread the virus through contact. For instance, your cat wanders through the neighbor’s yard and picks up the virus on her feet she can then bring it into your home potentially infecting any canines on the property.

The parvo virus works in one of two ways ? through the heart or the intestines. The intestinal infection is picked up by an animal through oral contact with contaminated feces. In other words, a dog has to come into contaminated feces from another dog. The intestinal dog parvo symptoms happen when the virus attacks rapidly dividing cells in the intestinal crypts, lymph nodes and bone marrow. This allows normally occurring bacteria from the intestine to enter the blood stream make the animal contagious. The virus is shed in the stool for up to three weeks making this disease very contagious to non-vaccinated pets.

The cardio form of this infection is usually seen in puppies that are infected before birth or shortly thereafter. It is noteworthy that the cardiac form of CPV is not as common since the mother passes immunity on to her pups from birth. The parvo virus will then attack the heart in the infected puppy and death will occur shortly afterwards.

Dog parvo symptoms usually present themselves within 3 to 10 days of contact. They include the following: lethargy, vomiting, fever and diarrhea. The diarrhea can cause severe dehydration and secondary infections. The dog will not usually die from the virus but from a secondary infection.

Survival rate depends on how quickly parvo virus is diagnosed and treatment is begun. If it is not caught early enough, the best treatment is an IV through which fluids are pushed to re-hydrate the dog more quickly. In addition to the fluids, antibiotic and anti-nausea shots may be given intramuscularly. With the proper care the prognosis is good, but without it your dog is sentenced to an early death. There has been some evidence that the human antiviral, Tamiflu, can be effective in treating parvovirus, but there are not studies to substantiate this. A veterinarian will recommend that you get your pet vaccinated against parvo approximately eight weeks after the puppy is weaned. With the prevalence of this virus and its ability to kill, some precaution should be taken to protect your dog. Get your puppy vaccinated ? we speak from experience!

Dog Biting Problems

Author: Brad Davenport
01.06.2009

Out of all the dog behavioral problems, biting is considered to be the worst and the most serious. Even if your dog goes on the couch quite often, it might not present you as much problem as from a biting behavior. Some communities insist on putting the dog down if he bites someone severely. If your dog has a biting problem it can even mean the end of his life. So you have to take immediate action to solve the biting problem of your dog.

However, biting problems in puppies are quite normal. When puppies start to teeth, they will have a natural tendency to bite everything that they can get hold of, including you. Though a puppy bite might break your skin, it will not cause any serious damage. But then, this is the right time for you to start training your puppy to stop biting.

Don’t be cruel to your dog or excessively harsh with the discipline, but let your dog no when he bites you too hard. If you dog bites you hard, pull your hand away immediately and say ouch, or bad dog, or something like that. Let him know that he has hurt you.

Most dog biting problems have a physiological cause behind them. You see, dogs don’t only bite when they want to hurt something. They bite something if they want to hold onto it, they bite to play, and they bite as a way to warn people or other dogs do not go any further. The problem is that dogs have thicker skins than people. Your dog thinks of you as just another dog, so he can easily bite through your skin accidentally. If you don’t address the dog biting problem while he is still a puppy, it can become serious. If you do train him not to bite too hard, he will grow up to be a great pet.

Of course, some dog biting problems occur because of aggression. You might just have a temperamentally difficult dog that gets angry and tries to hurt. If this is the case, you really need to send him to obedience school. These sorts of dog biting problems often lead to another dog being seriously injured, or even a person being hurt.

You absolutely have to take the problem completely seriously and find help even if it costs a bundle. Dog trainers can help almost any dog, but your average pet owner can’t.

In case your neighborhood has a dog with biting problem, your defence is to keep a pepper spray handy. Dont hesitate to use the pepper spray when a dog tries to bite you. If you are squeamish about using a pepper spray, then try to make friends with that particular dog with the help of a beef jerky.
