www.facebook.com www.twitter.com Here Tucker is learning positive training about using his crate and staying in his crate until I say his magic word “break” to come out. Notice how I am not using any verbal cues or reinforcements while he’s in the crate (only to get him into the crate I used the phrase “go to your house”). He is a fast learner and is doing very well with distracts while he’s in the crate. I dropped his treats and a toy and he didn’t move! www.goldenretrievertrainingtips.net Make Golden Retriever training fun and enjoyable by following the tips given in this passage. The tips seem really effective and quite simple too.
www.pamsdogacademy.com First, I want to say that Bandit does love his crate. He will just go in his crate when he is tired at home and when we travel he is sound asleep in his crate. If I could read Bandit’s mind, I would say that he barks out of frustration in the crate when at agility. He wants to be out playing on the equipment, swimming, catching frisbee’s, etc… He knows that we do fun things at the agility field and he does not want to be in his crate while I am out there walking around. (setting up the field, etc…) So, instead of just letting him bark; like many do. I decided that I would work on this behavior and slowly build it to where he learns to be quiet and calm in his crate at agility. He is the same way when he is waiting his turn for another dog or Isabelle to run the course. So, you will see in my next video how I have worked on that as well. The GREAT things about dog is that they teach us how to be patient. Sure I could yell and scream at him to “Be Quiet” like many do, but I do not think that makes the dogs “Be Quiet”. I think that it only stresses them out more and we all know how stress effects humans. I am sure that dogs are not any different. If stress keeps continuing on a daily basis there is bound to be some health problems occur. So. I do not believe yelling will solve the issue, but rather make it worse. Have patience with your dog and train him to be calm in those environments that are over stimulating or exciting or that stress him out …

A dogs natural instincts is not to soil his sleeping area or den. When the dog learns that the crate is his special place then he will not soil his sleeping area. A dog likes to have his sleeping area clean like we do.
A cage or crate is a place to put your dog for a short period of time. They are used for travel by airplane, bus, or car. A person needs to get their pet used to it so they can be put in it without causing any stress on the pet.
Never use a crate for a means of punishment. This is the dogs special place to rest in; he should feel protected and safe in his home.
This type of training will take a lot of patience and time. It can take days to weeks depending how your dog responds to the training.
Crates come in all different sizes and shapes. There are cloth ones that are only good if the owner is nearby. The plastic ones work well and usually have a holder for the food. If you need a cage that can be folded buy a metal cage and it will fold flat. In order to get the right size, be sure the dog can stand up and turn around.
In order to get started in training your dog to use the crate, put it near the owner. Get some toys to encourage him into the cage. If necessary get little pieces of food and place them near the door and slowly move the food inside the crate.
Being sure there is fresh water daily is very important. A dog will whine until he gets used to his new home. Do not let him out when he whines but wait until he is done, so he learns whining is not okay.
People work and are gone most of the day, if this is your situation, find an alternative to the crate. A dog should not be kept in the crate all day. He is going to get crated at night so he needs freedom during the day.
Dogs crying at night is not uncommon, he is in a new place and needs to adjust. Puppies have to be taken out at night, and you will need to decide if a dog just wants out or has to go to the bathroom. Keeping the cage near you at night will help the dog to not feel so lonely.
Remember to take your pet outside after eating, the dog or puppy needs exercise on a regular basis so do not use the crate to contain him all day. It should be a good and happy place for short periods of time and a place to sleep at night.
