Vegetarians like animals too – they just do not eat them. Or perhaps that is why they do not eat them. Whatever! There is a question that troubles some vegetarians that own pets, and it is: do I have to feed them meat or can I provide vegetarian diets for my cat and dog. It is well worth thinking about this dilemma before getting a usually carnivorous pet.

Domestic carnivores such as cats and dogs are omnivores, which means that they will eat pretty much anything If a domestic animal goes ferule (wild) it will revert to its primitive form, which means that it will hunt and forage.

Cats and dogs will eat grains and grasses but they prefer them semi-digested, which is why, after they make a kill, they usually tear the stomach open first and eat that and the internal organs. The meat comes last on the list.

You can see by looking at the animals’ teeth that they have fangs for killing and gripping (for ripping) and molars for grinding and crushing. The grinding and crushing refers to grains and bones.

This means that you may be able to sustain your pets on a vegetarian diet, |but it probably will not be simple. There has been a lot of investigation into the dietary needs of human beings and so someone on a diet, measures what he consumes against what his body needs and takes supplements to match the shortfall.

However do you know precisely what your pets’ requirements are and how you can supply them? If you do not, where will you find out? I am certain you can with quite a lot of study, yet do you have that level of commitment? And do you think that your pet would thank you for making it a vegetarian? It may even turn your pet into a rapacious killer to make up the deficit or fulfill its craving for meat.

Cats and dogs need a high percentage of protein, so do you think that you will be able to sneak enough nuts and tofu into its diet to supply enough? You might find your pets chasing every bird in your garden trying to catch some meat, instead of watching them lazily from under your seat.

All in all, a vegetarian diet is not a good idea for domestic animals such as cats and dogs, and if you have trouble opening the cans or giving it raw meat, maybe you could ask someone else in the family who is a little less delicate to feed the animals or you could feed them meat less frequently, say just if you take them to your friend’s or mother’s house, then you can let them do it for you.

The other approach is to have rabbits or gerbils and tropical fish. Cats are not functional animals as dogs are in the sense that a dog will discourage burglars and if you are only thinking of pets as stress-reducers or a way of introducing your kids to the animal world, a rabbit will do that just well.

Hooray- you’ve just added a new furry member to your family and you want things to work out purrfectly. Here are just a few tips that can get you started in the right direction:

1. Before picking up your new fuzzball have all the items you need already at home. The basics:

Litter box- covered, uncovered- you decide. But choose a litter that is scoopable whether it is corn, wheat or clay.

Scooper- this will get a lot of use so we recommend the metal ones for durability.

Food- so important and you want to give your new baby the best. Check the labels and avoid soy, corn and grains in general. They can cause allergies.

Water- cats do not drink enough water so the best thing that you could add to your new pet’s home is a pet drinking fountain. The running water piques their curiosity and encourages them to drink more.

Bowls- avoid plastic. Either get ceramic or metal bowls to avoid kitty acne.

Grooming supplies- a metal brush is a must. Let kitty’s reaction tell you how much she likes to be groomed.

Toys- time to have fun. Cats love to play no matter their age. Just find what floats their boat and get lots of it. And don’t forget the catnip.

Carrier- plastic carriers can be costly, but safety needs to be a priority. Carrying you new kitty out to the car or holding him on your lap can cause an accident. Your cat does not know you yet and can get nervous and jump out of your arms.

Cat condos or cat trees- the more the better. Cats love to have a variety of things to do. Having different size cat condos through the house will please kitty.

2. Bringing kitty into the house: Whether you have other pets at home or not the best way to get your new friend acclimated is to give him his own room. Have all of his supplies set up in this room. Expect that the cat will spend the next week in this space getting used to the noises, smells and routine of his new home.

Spend time and share treat sand toys with him. Let him adjust to his new home at his own pace.

Some kitties are outgoing, some are shy. Some are independent, some are cuddlers. Whoever your kitty is accept her for that and love her.

3. Letting your cat into the house: If you have other pets we strongly recommend reading an article on how to introduce your new friend to them. The Humane Society of the United States is a great resource for this information.

Let kitty go at her own pace. Her “safe” room should always be available when she needs it. Remember to reinforce the positive by providing kitty with loads of praise and attention.

Let you new friend determine the amount of companionship he wants. His actions will be your guide. Most importantly, always love him and remember that he depends on you for everything!
