During your meals, you need to train your Shih Tzu dog to sit and stay in a specific area when the family is eating. This may take some time but eventually they will remain in a sit position until after your dinner is over and then of course you should praise their actions by offering them up a nice hot meal that they can eat in their own food bowl, but only after everybody else is finished eating.
Shih Tzu dogs are highly intelligent creatures and many pet owners do not give them enough credit when it comes to the way they can read and understand our body language. Some people have no idea that the body language that we display has a major impact on how well a Shih Tzu dog will listen to us and obey our commands. Using the correct form of body language can also quickly stop your Shih Tzu dog from displaying an improper behavior.
When youre angry at your puppy or adult Shih Tzu dog, do not chase them around the house. You may be upset with them, but to your puppy, he or she thinks youre playing a game and they will run around forever.
When it comes time to give commands to your shih tzu take note of your posture. You should stand almost like a marine with your chest out and head back. Also, speak in a firm voice. This will let your shih tzu know that you mean business and the shih tzu will have more respect and also be slightly intimidated. This will help in the training process.
If you shih tzu gets excited easily then you must react in the opposite fashion. Use slow hand gestures and talk in a low voice. This will create a calming affect and you will notice your dog’s behavior changing as a direct reaction of you.
Here is a great retrieval training tip: get some snacks together and sprinkle them on the floor a few feet away from your shih tzu. Do not let them run up and grab them right away. Make the shih tzu wait a minute or so in a seated position and when you are ready give the command “pickup” and allow your dog to eat.
This type of training works best when your shih tzu puppy is hungry. Every time you place food in front of them repeat the “pickup” command until they associate it with putting food in their mouth. Then you can start working with a tennis ball or whatever else you would like.
When your shih tzu is less than one year old make sure you confine them to one room in your living quarters. You might even want to use some child safety equipment until you are comfortable that they will not get into any trouble while you are away.
