What could be better than having a dog? They are adorable, fun, and extremely loyal. Most dog owners would agree that dogs are the best friends of men. They truly are that special.
Of course, they also have tons of energy that needs to be burned off. Getting them enough exercise is quite a responsibility on our part. Moreover, we need to take care of their feeding and attend to any health issues.
Of course, one more aspect of having a dog is their training. For example, if your dog jumps up on people this might not be desired by some, or it might be outright dangerous.
So you may be wondering how you can fix this jumping issue? Well, to start off with you would do well to understand the reason behind this undesirable behavior. Most of the time, dogs jump up on people because they are excited and have too much energy. However, if the person is small, a child for example, this could be a serious problem.
So this really means that you need to teach him to stop it. You could go about it the following way: Instead of welcoming his gesture, simply turn away as he is about to jump. Then ignore him.
This is essential because your dog will come to understand that you do not like the jumping. Also, he will get nothing out of it – not even your attention.
You have to show him that you are the leader and that the dog will not be rewarded if he or she misbehaves.
Only return your attention to him when he is back to behaving himself. Let him settle down and only then reward him with a treat and your attention.
Your dog will be able to realize that staying down and behaving will earn him a reward. This is why it is important to start correcting your dog’s behavior at an early stage.
