Dog Bleeding Is Normal

Many time dogs that have blood dripping, is common. It could be an emergency if there is lots of blood, but normally its just dogs heat cycle. If you have a puncture wound apply a compress and get a to a vet quickly. Other types of bleeding can be cause by many things including eating bone that splinter and cause intestinal bleeding, if unchecked could be fatal.

Estrus is similar but different than human menstruation. You may have a 6-8 month old female dog (possibly a pure bred dog) and are now facing the cycles of life. Female dogs “in heat” usually start their heat cycle or menstruation for the first time 6-8 months after birth. This can be easy enough to handle since it is usually not that much blood. Unlike human cycles, canine cycles are about twice a year and last about a month each time. During this time, take care to not have unintentional mating, you must keep your dog secure.

If you are at all interested in breeding your dog, then this is a process you will have to adapt to. A dog diaper is a great solution to keeping the mess to a minimum. Add a sanitary napkin inside the durable cotton cloth diaper and it won’t slide off (these are much better than what you get at the local pet store). The sanitary napkin can be changed several times and the diaper stays clean. Also, the diaper can be machined washed and will hold up for years.

Dog diapers are better than disposables because they are made for that purpose and they work. Many people have tried to use disposable diapers till they can order a dog diaper, which is fine. However, disposables are hard to keep on the dog. Some people will wrap tape around the diaper but be careful not to make it to tight and harm your dog.

Getting your bitch fixed is one solution, but can cost anywhere from $100-$500. The surgery is quite involved and is irreversible, no more puppies. Spaying or getting your dog “fixed” is a serious surgery and can take some time to recover.

Spaying is my least favorite option. Only spay if you are sure you do not want pups someday. Remember that you may feel different years from now and may want to continue the blood line. Dog diapers are cheap, and avoid the trauma of putting your pup through surgery.
