Advice On How To Call Your Little Doggie

Oh how much fun this is going to be! You are going to be choosing a name for your brand new little puppy! That’s a big responsibility but also a big honor. You need to choose just the right name, not too cute or too frilly or too goofy, plus you want it to ‘fit’ the pet.

There are major pressures to picking a name. Classic names like Fido or Champ are always an option but are not that popular with kids. If you have kids, they’ll probably argue for a more hip name. You can also pick the name of your favorite actor, singer, world leader, or so on and use that as your dog’s name. There’s no limit to what you can choose.

Here are a few suggestions to help you in your deliberations:

Your dog is probably going to live fifteen years or more. Don’t make a hasty decision and choose a name you hate but will have to live with for years to come.

Don’t go crazy with a long or complicated name. It gets tiresome to call out a really complex name over and over, across years. Instead, keep it to one to three syllables. If you have to use multiple names, keep it simple.

The best way to teach your puppy its name is to use it every time you talk to the puppy. If you scold the puppy, call the puppy, praise the puppy, whatever – use the name. You want the puppy to hear that word and know it has something to do with him. Ideally the puppy will come running when he hears his name. Because of this make sure you don’t name the puppy something that will be embarrassing or offensive to you or anyone else.

You don’t have to name your puppy right away. Take some time to play with the puppy. This lets you get to know him before you pick a name. It’s better to let the puppy go without a name for a few days or a week, than to name him right away and then decide later that the name doesn’t fit.

Get advice. Family and friends can also give you valuable input. Try a Name The Puppy party. Invite folks over and then offer a prize to whoever comes up with the name you end up picking.

There’s a great name for every puppy. Take time and give it some thought, so you find the right one to fit your dog and make you happy.
