Why Pet Cats And Dogs Do Not Get Along Well With Each Other

You’ve probably heard that cats and dogs won’t coexist in the same house, but is this true?

Both animals will fight for their territory. Dogs will mark their territory, and will bark and even bite to protect it. Cats may be smaller animals, but they have sharp claws and can also be territorial.

So how can you train cats and dogs to live together peacefully? You’ll need to start with obedience. The dog is likely to be the aggressor, so you’ll want to train your dog to be very obedient. A very obedient dog will stop when you tell him ‘no.’

Cats love to roam around, so when you bring a new cat home, allow them to do so. This will also scatter their scent around the house.

Next you’ll want to separate the cat from the rest of the house by putting him in a separate room. Let the dog roam around the house, smelling the cat’s scent. He’ll very quickly associate the smell of the cat with the home, which will make the cat less of a threat to your dog.

Dogs will first start barking when they see another animal that they perceive as a threat. A dog is extremely unlikely to immediately get physical with the other animal. Instead, they’ll try to scare the other animal away.

Just tell your dog ‘no’ when he starts barking. He’ll begin to see that the cat is a pet and is allowed to be in the home.

Wait until your dog calms down and is no longer barking before you let him get close enough to smell the cat. When the dog is no longer barking, this is a sign that you have successfully introduced the animals.

Because cats are naturally aloof, the cat will likely go off on his own. This can be a problem later because the animals will not have had sufficient time to get to know each other, so keep them in the same room for awhile until they seem comfortable.
