The dog should be crated overnight, when you leave the house and when you aren’t keeping an eye on him. Your job is to prevent accidents from happening. The more accidents the dog has, the longer he will take to potty train.
Don’t bother with newspapers or puppy pads. Take the dog outside at the same times every day. Praise when he potties in the right spot.

I have had and raised alot of dogs and never used a crate, sounds like what your doing is good with the overnight area, the best results I got was just getting the dog into a routine like getting up early and letting him out letting him out before he goes to bed down for the night, there will be accidents but the same things works with kids,(I raised 3 thru them overnight accident years) kids that is, and countless dogs,
Putting a dog in a crate just seems prett cruel to me..
Just my opinoin

put the crate in that space, leave door open and put bed in crate, hopefully the puppy will come out if it needs to potty on the paper
don’t leave water out after bedtime ,I hope its a small breed ,small crate/cage make sure the crate isn’t to big,if it is you may want to block off some of the crates space, put the bed in,leave crate door open, leave toys and opposit side of the crate wee pads or paper on the other and that area blocked by your baby gate
The crate is a great little space that the dog knows is always his, when he is trained properly, you could remove the child gate, but leave the crate wiht his bed inside, you have no idea how many dogs love their crates, but never to be used as a punishment place
all my dogs love their crates, its their space

How old is the puppy?

I put my new puppy in a crate over night and he did really well. I would wake up at least once during the night to let him out but put him right back in until i woke up. He never had an accident in his crate surprisingly but we still had to work on him in the house. We found out every couple hours at first would help him learn outside is potty time:)

Better not use the crate what u do with the overnight area sounds fine, I usually use a news paper and when they poo on it i praise them, when they didnt i used to put the poo on the newspaper and show it to them, after they got used to the newspaper i took the newspaper out of the door, then when they wanted to do their business they would scratch the door, slowly i took the newspaper away and when they scratched the door i just took them out, then i would just take them out at regular times 2 times a day, worked with every puppy apart from our current bitch which is a belgian shepherd/chow chow mix and she did it naturally by herself without ever being trained
