Educating a dog takes a lot of time and patience. Furthermore this is not something that you can achieve in a matter of days or weeks – it will take months. The trick to getting the most effective results from your little pup is to be firm with it but not deal out any physical punishment.
This is not how you should be training your dog and studies have shown that physical punishment is not an effective training method when it comes to any type of animal.
Infant dogs just don’t know how to respond or what to do when you hit them, even casually. It doesn’t know what you want and when you do this, you are not only hurting your little puppy but also training it to fear you. This is not the effect you want I’m sure.
The reason for this is that dogs when young, do not know how to associate hurt with bad behavior, unlike fully grown dogs. Remember that puppies that have just come into the world are curious and are discovering new things everyday. They also start their teething period and may have very sensitive teeth and so they chew your things. As it is already confused enough, by hitting and terrorizing it, you are just adding to the confusion.
You might think that teaching your dog with a light smack is fine. It might not hurt so much but it will terrify the life out of the infant dog and if you continue to do this, it will eventually learn to steer clear of you at all costs, and you’ll never form a close bond with it.
Yelling at it is the next thing you should avoid doing as well. While yelling doesn’t inflict pain, it does instill fear (if you shout loud enough) which is scary enough for a baby dog.
Instead of shouting at the top of your voice, a better way of dealing with badly behaved puppies is to be firm with your puppy and tell it to stop in an authoritative tone of voice.
Hopefully this guide has helped you understand your new best friend a little better. The best way to deal with misbehaved puppies is through non-physical authority, and a lot of persistence and patience.
