Any tips on crate training a puppy?

Growing up, my father used to always take care of this and I never paid much attention. All I know is that my father now says, “Condo” and the dog runs to his cage like and he loves it. He even naps in there and doesn’t cry at all about going in there. What tips do you have for me to get my puppy to behave this way? Thanks

   Start by putting puppy in and offering a treat that it likes, at the same time say ‘bed’ or whatever command you are going to use. Keep the door open and continue to ‘play this game’ until, when you say ‘bed’ the pup goes in happily on his own. Then shut the door for a short while and leave him. Let him out and make a great fuss of him, then start all over again. I have an 3yr Lab trained this way and when she sees a crate she still rushes in and lies down ! Training has to be fun and rewarding, that way you can train a dog to do anything.

   Start by putting a treat in their crate, then say the command in a loud and firm voice, and push he/she into the crate. Do this repeatedly every day until when you say the command he/she goes by him/herself. Once he/she does do this alone, continue to put a treat into the crate, and then every once in a while skip a treat one night, and then gradually skip two nights in a row, then three, etc., until you hardly ever put one in. Then you can stop all together once you’re at about twice a month or so. Hope that helps!

   sTART AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.This helps with house breaking too. Put them in the(condo) at night lock it . but in the morning. Take them out to pee. At night talk to them , tell them its time to go nite, nite in your condo.Before long they automaticaly go to the condo. leave it open allthe time, except at night, untill there use to it. It works beautifully. good luck, p.s. What ever you do, dont make it a munishment place, he ll hate it.

   Some people worry that crate confinement is cruel, but if you do it right, your dog won’t see it that way at all. His crate can be a cozy den where he retreats from household chaos or just relaxes. And once he’s housetrained, your dog will have the run of the house as well as a nice little den of his own–just leave the door open for him.
