I do not use a bell with my dog for him to let me know when he needs to go out, but if you want this to be your dog's way of telling you he needs to go out, then start it young, it can never hurt. You will still need to reinforce him going to the bathroom outside, and you don't want to take too long at the bell stage of things, because at a young age he may have an accident and that defeats the purpose. I would just take him out of his crate, bring him to the door where the bell is, with your hand, move his paw to hit the bell (can't expect him to do it himself right away, but he'll learn, also a young puppy may not have the muscle control to move his paw in that direction), then bring him outside to do his business. When he goes praise him and give him a treat.

My dog does other things to let me know he needs to go out. He usually comes over to me and nudges me with his nose, or if he is in his crate he will just make a small cry or bark to let me know he needs to go out. I know many people who like the bell though because it is a very explicit I need to go out sign. Be careful that he doesn't start ringing the bell as he gets older just to go out to play or to get your attention, that could get to be a annoying.

Good luck!

I have never used this method. So i think it is pretty pointless. When the puppy comes out of the crate and does its Business outside give the puppy a tasty reward and give it lots of praise. That's what i have always used when crate training and the basic training. Dogs love tasty treats and will do lots of things for treats. My puppy was house trained and crate trained in 1 week. She was 8 weeks old when i got her and then by the time she was 9 weeks old she was house trained and crate trained.

*Good Luck and i hope this Helps! :)
